Do hamsters make good pets?

Hamsters have modest requirements, unlike high maintenance pets like a new puppy! They need somewhere suitable to live – a small(ish) cage with an exercise wheel attached to the side. Plus food and fresh water, of course. Food is inexpensive and a kilo bag of hamster food will last several weeks. Hamsters do like attention and, once your new hamster has settled in, it is important that you handle him regularly to get him used to human contact. They also need plenty of exercise and room to run around in. If space is a little limited and you have other pets, like a cat or a dog, then buy an exercise ball which your hamster can use to “walk” around the floor of your lounge or kitchen in safety.

Hamsters are nocturnal and will use their exercise wheel enthusiastically at night. If you do not want your own sleep patterns disturbed, then put the cage in another room. Hamsters live for about 2 to 3 years. They are very cute and they do not need supervision during the day while the children are at school and you are at work. They also do not require a daily walk nor do they need to be put in expensive kennels when you go away! Find a friend or neighbour who is happy to to feed and water your small pet daily and clean out the cage once a week. Just make sure you thank your friend with a bottle of vino or box of Devon fudge on your return from holiday.
