What type of dog lead is best for your pet?

When it comes to choosing a dog lead for your pet you are spoilt for choice as to what’s available on the market. Depending on how big your dog is and how well they walk on a lead will help you decide which lead may be best suited to your dog. Small to medium dogs that pull on a lead may be better using a harness. A harness allows you to have more control over them than therefore reign them in when you need to. Standard leads often clip on to collars or they can be the type that tighten as the dog pulls. If you do decide to use one of these you need to check that it is not hurting your dog and that it slackens off properly when it is supposed to.

If you want your dog to have some freedom but do not want or cannot let him off the lead then it is advisable to get an extender lead. These will extend and retract as your dog walks. You can lock the lead so it won’t extend when walking past a road for example. These can be great but they are often not very hardwearing so ensure that your dog doesn’t chew through them.

Another type of lead is the one that fits around the dogs mouth. These leads are usually put over the dogs mouth(similar to a muzzle) and then a lead clipped on to the fastenings under the dogs chin. When the dog pulls it will cause their head to pull to the side which will stop them from pulling. These can be great for dogs that really pull and are hard to control.
