Tips for keeping your pooch entertained with toys
Did you know that your pet’s toys are not just to alleviate boredom, but they also reduce their stress and anxiety resulting in less problematic and destructive behaviours? Toys and games that provide enrichment such as games where toys are hidden and found by your dog or balls that contain treats that the pet needs to work out how to access help to keep your pet healthy in body and mind.
It is a good idea to keep some toys that are only given to the animal when you are away so that it retains its novelty value. One such toy is a lick mat which is a ridged pad of silicone that can be spread with dog-friendly peanut butter for the dog to lick at while you are away. It would not be a good idea for the dog to have it permanently but as a treat it is fine.
Dog puzzle toys are a good way to keep a dog entertained as they need to work out what to do to get the treat. It could be that they need to lift a flap or push a lever to achieve success but with encouragement from owners initially until they get the idea, a dog puzzle toy will provide hours of entertainment for your pooch.
