What foods should guinea pigs eat?
Guinea pigs should have access to fresh, clean water at all times. They should also have the opportunity to eat hay and/or grass at all times.
As well as water and hay, it is important to feed guinea pigs dry grass-based nuggets which contain vitamin C which is essential for good health. Do not buy extra large packs of nuggets unless you have several guinea pigs to feed, as the vitamin C is destroyed over time and after exposure to air. It is advised that you do not just top up the bowl but throw away old nuggets and put out fresh ones every day.
Many supermarkets sell muesli type mixes for guinea pigs but you will find that your guinea pigs will leave the bits that they don’t like which is usually the fibre. This means that your pets will be lacking fibre in their diet and this can lead to dental problems.
It is also important to feed fresh greens and other vegetables every day. Broccoli, cabbage leaves, spinach, carrots and carrot tops and cauliflower leaves are all good for guinea pigs and many of these vegetables are also a good source of vitamin C. Dandelions should only be fed in moderation.
