Does your dog get separation anxiety?

Separation anxiety is a common problem whenever a dog is left on its own in the home. All sorts of other problems can occur such as destructive chewing, house soiling, and constant barking which can be annoying to neighbours resulting in complaints so are there ways to alleviate this problem and make your dog less anxious?

Training is the key to this issue and can be started when out for a walk with your pet. If you are able to walk with a friend or neighbour ask them to walk the dog while you hide for about 30 seconds initially. They could distract the dog with a toy if necessary. When you return to the dog do not fuss them but just carry on walking. Gradually increase the time you are away from the dog until you can leave them for about 10 minutes. This will require patience as the process may take a few weeks.

This training process can be continued at home again by leaving the dog for short periods initially and gradually increasing the time away.

Leaving a radio in the house while you are away can also help to reduce your dog’s anxiety and there are even specific playlists that are designed to calm your dog and hopefully reduce the unwanted behavioural issues.
