Finding the right food for your dog

When it comes to choosing the right food for your dog, there is so much choice that you may find it a little overwhelming. Some dogs seem happy to eat almost anything you put in front of them whereas others are much more fussy or their stomachs cannot tolerate certain foods. Even if your dog will eat anything, it is important consider what is in the pet food yu are buying and whether it is giving them all the nutrient they need.

As your dog grows from a puppy you will need to change his food. Puppies need a different sort of food to an adult dog and dogs with sensitive stomachs or allergies will need a different type of food again. As your dog gets older and moves in to his senior years, they may again need a change of food. As they become less active, they are likely to need less calories. Sometimes, adult dog food can have too many calories for a dog that is less active and they can quickly become overweight. Being overweight carries a number of health risks to a dog so it is important to ensure your dog is kept at the right weight.

You can feed your dog on complete wet food, compete dried food or wet food and a mixer. Some people feed their dogs fresh meat and vegetables but you do need to do this very carefully as they may not get everything they need or you may find that it doesn’t suit them.

When choosing your dog food, a dry complete mix is often a popular choice. If you don’t like the fact that it is dried, you could always a spoonful of wet food in with it if you wish. Prices vary drastically for dried for from around five pounds for 12 kg bags upwards of forty pounds for 12 kg bags. Not all cheap foods are bad and not all expensive ones are good but you should look carefully at the ingredients to see what you are actually getting for your money. Foods with a higher meat content are usually better quality than those that are filled with cereals.

Some owners have started to feed their dogs a meat free diet. This may be the case if the owner is vegetarian and does not believe in killing animals for meat. Dogs are carnivores and many experts are not convinced that a meat free diet is the best option for them.

Before making any changes to your dogs diet, be sure to introduce all changes slowly. You need to give your dog time to adapt to the new food.
