Is your pet suffering from hayfever?

Hayfever is problematic for many people at this time of the year, but did you know that dogs can suffer with the bothersome condition too? However, unlike humans the allergy manifests itself in dogs as itchy, flaky skin resulting in the dog continually scratching itself and causing the skin to become sore and inflamed. The dog may also experience itching in the ears which can in turn become infected. So how can we help our precious pets to cope with these allergies if they are prone to them?

When dogs come in from playing outside or from a walk quickly wash or wipe them down to remove the pollen from their fur. A medicated shampoo can be used if the skin is already irritated which will help to soothe the inflammation.

On days when the pollen level is high it may be better to restrict the dog’s access to grass areas however this can be difficult to achieve when the pollen levels are persistently high for days at a time.

If the problem is severe then a trip to the vet may be necessary. The vet will be able to prescribe steroids or antihistamines to control the itching which will make the dog feel more comfortable.
