What to do if your child is scared of a pet?
Sometimes children can fear certain animals. It may be that they were fine but have had a bad experience such as been bitted or scratched or they may just not used to seeing many pets and so are a bit wary.
If you have a child that is scared of a family or friends’ pet then it is not a good idea to try and keep them away from them all the time. If you know that the animal is friendly then you should try and encourage your children to build up a relation with them by taking very small steps. Sometimes just watching them through a patio door or playing out in the garden whilst the pet is outside too will show the child that they do not have to be afraid of them. Over time you can get the pet to interact more with your child and maybe ask them to throw a ball if it is a dog or play with a cat with a cat toy. Often children are scared of dogs that are excitable or barking, so try and allow your child to meet with the pet at a time when it is more subdued. Never force a child to stoke a pet that they don’t want to as this will often result in more fear. Giving the door or cat a treat is a good way to start but be sure that fingers are kept well out of the way.
