Caring for your pet rat: accommodation and feeding

Do not use a hamster cage as this will not be big enough. The best cage for your rats is a wire cage measuring at least 50cm tall as rats are very active creatures and love to climb. Make sure the floor area is made of solid material to avoid your rat trapping and injuring its feet. Don’t use an aquarium style glass cage as these do not allow for enough ventilation.

Spread litter over the floor of the cage. Place dust-extracted soft bedding or shredded paper bedding in a nest box where they can enjoy peaceful sleep and rest. You can make a nest box out of a small cardboard box. Using material from an old towel or something similar, make a hammock to hang in the cage. The cage needs to be placed away from direct sunlight and draughts.

Rats are omnivores and will enjoy a varied diet which includes grains, vegetables and protein. Commercial rat food is available at pet shops and some larger supermarkets but they will also enjoy occasional pieces of fruit and vegetables, peanuts, sunflower seeds and dry dog food. Your rat will be fond of eating most household scraps and titbits but be careful to not let them get too fat.

Fresh clean water must be always available.
