Keeping your dog safe at Christmas

It is probably something that you do not really consider, but there are particular hazards which are harmful to your dog at Christmas.

Most dog owners are aware that chocolate is dangerous for dogs so do be aware that your dog may be nibbling the chocolate tree decorations or raiding the open tin of wrapped chocolates, without you noticing. Nuts, blue cheese, Christmas pudding and mince pies may also be toxic for dogs and turkey bones can cause choking or damage the intestines if they are eaten.

If you have a real Christmas tree, then make sure your tree is well watered to help prevent needle drop and hoover daily around the tree in case your dog may be tempted to eat a pile of pine needles which could cause vomiting or diarrhoea. Pine needles can also become lodged in your pet’s delicate paw pads causing discomfort and irritation.

Although most Christmas decorations are not toxic in themselves; if they are eaten (especially in large quantities) then they may cause blockages in the stomach and intestines. Glass baubles may also cause cuts to the mouth if chewed. Keep holly, mistletoe and poinsettia plants out of reach of your pet as these are also mildly toxic if ingested.
